Mexico Summer Adventure
Sacrifice to do what's right
Working with youth gives me the chance to take them on real-world adventures that broaden their perspectives and leave a lasting impact.
One way I do this outside of People of Grace International Foundation is when I recently spent nearly two weeks in Baja, Mexico, with some of our Pursu1t youth, their parents, and young adults from Fleetwood International Church. We drove two hours from San Diego to Ensenada, where our team of 19 served at the YUGO base. During our time there, we built a house for a family in need and supported the local church.
After completing the house project, we traveled another two hours to La Base in Jaramillo. There, we continued our mission, serving the local church and teaching children, youth, and women in Colonet. We also visited a drug rehab center to share words of encouragement and personal stories with the patients.
It’s hard to believe that the last time I led a group to Baja California for outreach was 10 years ago. Back then, the biggest challenge was dealing with tarantulas at La Base. This time, the experience felt even more real and fresh—especially since it was my first time driving and participating in aspects of construction I hadn’t done before. Our pastor drove one van, and I took the wheel of the other. We navigated winding roads along steep cliffs and did plenty of off-roading to reach our worksites and churches, even on our day off by the ocean!
It’s incredible how just a short drive across the San Diego-Tijuana border can transport you to a completely different world, one where homes lack the luxuries and basic amenities we often take for granted.
One of the most profound lessons I took from this trip was the importance of sacrificing to do what’s right. The family we built the house for, despite their limited resources, provided us with drinks while we worked and even prepared a generous meal during the key handover. The rural church that hosted us also served dinner—something they could have easily said they couldn’t afford.
Throughout the trip, we encountered countless people who sacrificed their time, energy, and resources to do what was right, even when it cost them. Their selflessness reminded me that there is still goodness in this world. God truly inspires people to share love and light with those in need.
I hope you enjoyed reading this feature and that you’re wrapping up your summer with memories to last a lifetime!
With heartfelt thanks,
