From Clutter to Clarity (Blog)
“Having a clear mind and a clear space allows you to think and act with purpose.” – Erika Oppenheimer
In university, I was an average learner and had the habit of being a procrastinator.
When I had an exam, I would put off studying for it, and clean and organize my room instead. By the time I got down to studying, it was late and I would fall asleep while doing so. Somehow, I still did well in my exams.
I realized that my space had to be clear for my mind to be clear enough to absorb and understand information.
I apply this in teaching my students. During some activities and assessments, I have them clear their learning space. I also insist on them putting their worksheets in the right spots in their binders and sanitizing their tables after class. I know that if they organize their stuff, it will help them organize their thoughts. This will give them clarity of thought which will help them focus on accomplishing a task well.
Currently, I also clear my mind through exercise and prayer.
Exerting energy frees my mind and releases toxins. It enables me to sleep better which enables me to be more effective in my day to day. Talking to God while exercising reminds me of my reliance on Him for every aspect of my life. This too is freeing.
Being outdoors and absorbing nature and God’s creation is another great way to clear our minds.
When I can, I go outdoors and breathe in air that’s clear of all the artificial scents and dust particles found indoors. This makes me feel healthier and more able to function well.
Lastly, journaling is a psychologically recommended way to unburden ourselves of unhealthy feelings and thoughts. It helps us clear our minds to find peace and focus on what’s good in our lives.
So, this year, let’s aim to clear our spaces and our minds so we can live a life of purpose and be more effective in our day to day.
